The man who calls himself "John Smith" is, quite literally, a man out of his own time. Back in the days of Prohibition, he was a gun for hire with remarkable speed and accuracy, but who always played his own game. Fate put him in the path of a rip in time that opens in the Mojave Desert every so often, landing him in September 1990 and leading him to Hell, WI, where he finally settled after arranging new identity papers and a private investigator's license.

Since then, it's been so long since he used the name he was born with that he's almost forgotten what it was himself, and folks in town have more or less accepted him as "John Smith" and the fact that he's hardly aged in all that time. There's not always a lot of sleuthing to be done, but he gets enough business to maintain his meager booze-centric lifestyle.

He tries to present himself as a heartless, drunken louse, but he has a hidden streak of decency, sometimes swayed by innocents down on their luck even if it's meant that helping them would get him hurt. Particularly, it's been suggested that when, someday, he finally goes down, it'll be over a skirt, and he figures that's entirely likely. He hasn't seen terribly much of the stranger things about the town yet, but sooner or later, that kind of luck's got to run out.
